Arapahoe Basin, CO – More Colorado ski resorts launched into the 2011-12 season this week. Arapahoe Basin opened their lifts for the season at 9 a.m. Thursday morning, followed today by nearby Loveland Ski Area. In the state’s southwest corner, Wolf Creek will re-open tomorrow for its second weekend of skiing and riding

Arapahoe Basin’s snowmaking team worked relentlessly over the past week to produce snow for Thursday’s opening. The snowmakers’ efforts were complemented by early snowfalls in the area, including several fresh inches over the past week. Skiers and riders enjoyed an 18-inch base, and Black Mountain Express escorted guests to the intermediate High Noon run, and several features in the High Divide Terrain Park.

Perched on the Continental Divide, Arapahoe Basin and Loveland enjoy an elevation conducive to making snow and keeping conditions fresh for long periods of time. With a late season July 4 closing after one of the longest seasons in 14 years, Arapahoe Basin opened on Thursday after having been closed this summer for only 100 days.

“After an impressive season that extended for 10 months last year, it’s exciting that resorts are starting lifts and offering skiing in October,” said Melanie Mills, president and CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA). “Having three resorts open at this point in the year gives people even more options and hopefully encourages people to take advantage of the natural playgrounds Colorado offers.”

A simple shift in attitude can help us recognize the hidden potential for fulfillment in every event.

There is no secret recipe for happiness and contentment. The individuals who move through life joyously have not necessarily been blessed with lives of abundance, love, success, and prosperity. Such people have, however, been blessed with the ability to take the circumstances they‚ve been handed and make them into something great. Our individual realities are colored by perception˜delight and despair come from within rather than without. Situations we regard as fortuitous please us while situations we judge inauspicious cause us no end of grief. Yet if we can look at all we have accomplished without dwelling on our perceived misfortune and make each new circumstance our own, the world as a whole becomes a brighter place. A simple shift in attitude can help us recognize and unearth the hidden potential for personal and outer world fulfillment in every event, every relationship, every duty, and every setback.

The universe is often an unpredictable and chaotic place, and the human tendency is to focus on the negative and assume the positive will care for itself. But life can be no more or no less than what you make of it. If you are working in a job you dislike, you can concentrate on the positive aspects of the position and approach your work with gusto. What can you do with this job that can turn it around so you do love it. When faced with the prospect of undertaking a task you fear, you can view it as an opportunity to discover what you are truly capable of doing. Similarly, unexpected events, when viewed as surprises, can add flavor to your existence. By choosing to love life no matter what crosses your path, you can create an atmosphere of jubilance that is wonderfully infectious. A change in perspective is all it takes to change your world, but you must be willing to adopt an optimistic, hopeful mind-set.

To make a conscious decision to be happy is not enough. You must learn to observe life‚s complexities through the eyes of a child seeing everything for the first time. You must furthermore divest yourself of preconceived notions of what is good and what is bad so that you can appreciate the rich insights concealed in each stage of your life‚s journey. And you must strive to discover the dual joys of wanting what you have. As you gradually shift your perspective, your existence will be imbued with happiness and contentment that will remain with you forever.

Colorado photographer's work to be featured on 2012 stamp set

In 2012 the U.S. Postal Service will release the Earthscapes series of stamps. The images were taken from aircraft and Earth-observing satellites. In more than 20 years Jim Wark has taken thousands of photos from the view point of his single-engine plane.

Next year, five of them will be featured in the U.S. Postal Service's stamp set, Earthscapes, which will be issued October 2012.

The set features 15 stamps showcasing a variety of American landscapes taken from aircraft and satellites, according to a news release.

Wark's photos, taken between 1990 and 2007, include photos of natural landscapes from Yellowstone National Park and Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in southeast Utah, and industrial scenes from Pennsylvania, Texas and New York City.

The postal service contacted Wark in 2007, and the selection process began, he said.

retired geologist and mining engineer, now owns Airphoto photography in Pueblo. He has produced nine books of aerial photos, three of which are set to be released this fall.

In past years, The Denver Post commissioned Wark for a number of projects.

Wark learned to fly while serving in the Navy from 1954 to 1958, and his family has a long line of photographers that started in Ireland in 1850, he said.

"After I retired from the corporate world, I combined my passion for the two," Wark said.

One of the photos featured in the stamps set - Butte in the early morning - was taken in Utah and was one of Wark's first professional aerial photographs.

"The butte was so beautiful on that trip," Wark said. "It's kind of what got me started and made me think I could make a living out of this."

Since then, Wark has shot aerial photographs in every state - including Alaska and Hawaii - every Canadian province, Mexico and Costa Rica.

Wark said some of his favorite trips were to the Alaskan wilderness, where he would spend weeks camping in his plane.

"As a pilot, I can tell you that it takes a lot of nerve, going to a distant place where there is nothing," said John Wark, Jim Wark's 52-year-old son.

John Wark said he and his father started studying photography at the same time, and have spent years refining their techniques together.

Five years ago, Wark earned his own pilot's license and has continued to learn from his father.

Wark owns Wark Photography in Pueblo, and sees his father three or four times a week, he said. Wark said his father still does most of his work with film instead of a digital camera. Wark develops most of his father's photos at his lab.

"One of the nicest aspects of working with my dad is he is a very constructive person to work around, and that goes with everything in my life with him - personal, flying and photography."

Can Copyright Be Bad For Photography?

I don’t want to get on a jag about copyright infringement here, but a lawsuit filed this week against Ryan McGinley illustrates how copyright can potentially impinge artist’s creative expression if taken too far.

Rachel Corbett of ArtNet.com writes:

Artist Janine “Jah Jah” Gordon has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against photographer Ryan McGinley for copyright infringement, arguing that 150 of McGinley’s photographs, including several used in an ad campaign for Levi’s, a co-defendant in the suit, are “substantially based” on Gordon’s original work.

There’s a lot of emotion wrapped up in this case as Janine and Ryan have both shown at the Whitney and several prominent galleries where Janine says he had “access to view and examine” her images. Additionally, when ArtInfo.com contacted Janine (here) she says she has been begging McGinley to stop copying her work since the 1990′s through dealer and close friend Chris Perez. Also, noted was an incident according to the complaint in 2003, when she ran into him at a PS1 opening and he responded with “a fearful gasp and speedy retreat into the crowd.” Like I said, it’s very emotional. McGinley’s prints also sell for 4 times the amount of his older more established counterpart.

The complaint alleges that he copied her subject matter, lighting, composition and ideas:

There’s no doubt in my mind that seeing Ryan McGinley come up on your heels and churn out similar looking images would be a painful experience. But, this is where copyright hurts photographers. There’s nothing that hasn’t been done before so if you’re not allowed to draw inspiration from and take little parts of other photographers and artists work there’s nothing to take pictures of. I think the case will be impossible to prove in court, but I would guess the point is not to win but to raise awareness, get him to stop and go somewhere else for inspiration.

Despite proof to the contrary, some full-time professionals still believe they are entitled to be primary image providers. It is time to stop the blame game and re-focus on the challenge – how to earn a living by making pictures. Photographers can no longer afford to hang out a shingle with the moniker “good photography at a reasonable price”. The differentiators for success are as follows: highly distinctive imagery reflecting a clear and compelling aesthetic vision, marketing savvy, sharp business skills, adaptability and persistence. Today’s professional photographer must deliver nothing less.

The following is an article I found on @ laurencekim.com. I don't agree with all her points, but she does make some good ones about making a business out of photography.

I’m sorry to report that photographers feed at the bottom of the wealth-creation food chain. Why?

Zero barriers to entry. There is basically a zero barrier to entry to the professional photography business. No qualifications, schooling, certifications or experience are necessary. Since most people who become professional already have a camera, a computer and Photoshop (photography was their hobby), there’s a near zero investment in equipment needed. All it takes is a $50 Bludomain website and you’re good to go. Education (from sites like this) is free and readily available. Today’s $700 Nikon D5100 is miles better than the $5,000 Nikon D2X from 4 years ago. Do 2 hours of coaching with me (or someone like me) and you can learn a topic – pricing, for example – that took me years of trial and error to learn. Is it any surprise that every single day another dozen photographers in your town open up shop?

Zero leverage/scalability. Unless you’re going to open up a chain of employee-run studio photography stores, you have zero leverage. That is, you are simply trading your time for money, and there is a fixed amount of hours you can work before you run out of time or simply drop dead. Twenty years ago photographers who shot stock for Getty Images were able to leverage their images (i.e. sell them for decent money over and over again), but that market is basically dead now due to microstock.

Zero equity-building. Unlike the owner of the dry cleaning store who can sell his business and build wealth over time, your photography business builds no equity. [remember the 70's sitcom The Jeffersons? George Jefferson became wealthy by owning a chain of dry cleaning stores]. The typical wedding/portrait shooter (Sally Smith Photography) earns zero income the day she shoots her last wedding. Nobody out there will buy Sally Smith Photography. There is nothing to buy. Her copyrighted library of 200,000 wedding/portrait images has no value, because she’s already sold the images to her only possible customer. She might be able to sell her gear for a few hundred bucks but that’s it.

Zero benefits. You have to buy all of your own health insurance, for example. With the cost of family health insurance at $20,000 per year and going up 10-15% per year, this is a huge deal. Employees of large corporations often have dozens of smaller benefits as well – e.g. life insurance, employee wellness programs, reimbursement for health club memberships, employee discount programs, tax-saver accounts, etc.

I actually can’t think of a worse business than photography. I honestly can’t. In fact, if I were teaching an entrepreneurship class at a business school this would make a great exercise: Have my class think of a business that builds zero equity, had zero scalability and zero barriers to entry. It would be interesting to see if my class could come up with professional wedding/portrait photography. Knowing what makes a bad business would be very helpful in designing a good business.

The bottom line is this: from a wealth-creation standpoint, photography is a lousy career. But you probably already know that.

So what to do?

Don’t give up! Just because photography is a bad business doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile pursuing. It does have other non-business related benefits (primarily, it satisfies the urge to scratch your creative itch, which has non-monetary value that’s difficult to quantify). So here are some options:

Option 1: Curl up into the fetal position and rock back and forth. When finished, complain to everyone you know about all the newbies entering the market. Look under the seat cushions to scrape up your health insurance premium. Resume the fetal position and repeat.

Option 2: Take positive action.

Re-evaluate whether or not to be full-time vs. part-time. I wrote about this topic in my post “for love or money“. While photography is a lousy career (from a wealth-creation perspective), it can be a GREAT part-time business. The “low barrier to entry” issue is not a problem for the part-timer. In fact, it’s an advantage. Shoot 10 weddings a year and you can easily bring in $20,000 of extra annual income. Invest this extra while living on the salary from your day job and you will be on your way to financial independence and lasting wealth. How many people do you know can save and invest $20,000 per year?

Pick the right spouse. Photography as a full-time business works best when coupled with a spouse who has a solid job (with health insurance). If your family can live on your spouse’s salary, then you can save/invest nearly all of your photography income. How great would it be to save and invest $40,000-50,000 per year!

Invest your profits outside of photography. Spend less than you earn. Invest your savings wisely. Set a specific savings goal for the year. Do not make a single discretionary (i.e. non-essential) purchase until you’ve socked away that amount into an account earmarked for investing. Read a lot about investing. This will build your wealth a thousand times more than spending time reading ridiculous online forums where people debate Canon vs. Nikon and display their photos of brick walls. I don’t care if you choose real estate, stocks, mutual funds or whatever. Become knowledgeable, save and invest. Since your photography business does not build equity, you need to build that equity outside of photography. Buying a new D3s is NOT an investment, it is luxury, unnecessary spending. The $5,000 D3s will not earn you a single penny more than the $2,500 D700.

Hold on to your cash. Photographers spend way, way, way, way too much money. If I were hired as a business consultant to a photographer, the first thing that I would look at are their expenditures. Let’s look at some examples:

Gear: If your camera is less than 3 years old, there is NO NEED to upgrade your cameras. EVER. Cameras are so good now that you should use them until they wear out. I am still using my 5 year old 5D and getting stunning images from it. I could shoot all of my portrait sessions with my $60, 30 year old Olympus OM2n and my clients would be thrilled with the results.

Software: No need to upgrade. At most, upgrade with every 3rd release. Do you really need those thousands of fancy features that you’ll never use?

Branding: Branding is one of the most misunderstood topics for wedding/portrait photographers. YOU are the brand. Your images. Your attitude. How you treat your clients. Your brand is NOT your logo/letterhead. There is no reason to spend thousands of dollars on professional graphic design. Sure, it’s important for large corporations like Pepsi, Apple, and McDonalds to have the recognizable logo. But in order for your logo to establish your brand, you would have to have thousands and thousands of impressions (speaking with my MBA hat on) at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Your name in an attractive font is all you need for a logo.

Advertising: Don’t spend your hard earned cash on magazine ads. They are a waste of money. Spend a few thousand dollars on a magazine ad and you’ll be lucky to book one wedding from it. Great, you’re now working that wedding for free.

The most effective ways to generate business and profits are free or nearly free. How much does it cost you to not be an a-hole? How many times have you read a post on online forums like this: “My contract does not allow clients to use images without my permission, yet I saw they posted some of their wedding images on Facebook without my permission! How do I get them to cease and desist and/or compensate me for those images?” Are you f_ing kidding me!! Who are you, Annie Leibovitz? Instead I would thank them for the free advertising. In fact, on my client’s DVD I include a folder labeled “Facebook” with images perfectly sized for it. Which approach do you think will better improve your “brand”? And how much does it cost you to pick up the phone and make some sales calls? You can make more with a single phone call than you can with a $2,500 magazine ad.

Maximize revenue. Since your time is fixed, you have to maximize the revenue from each session. This is way too big a topic to be covered in a single bullet point or single blog post. It’s the basis of my entire blog. Read up on marketing and especially pricing. Photographers leave way too much money on the table. They don’t have a recognizable style, which results in average pricing. They don’t know how to price albums. Their package design invites nickle-and-dimeing from their clients. They sell online instead of face to face. They don’t know how to price prints. They don’t do proactive marketing. How many sales calls did you make this week? Zero? Then why are you amazed that your phone isn’t ringing?

Making money at photography is a difficult thing to do. I don’t want to discourage you from your dreams, you should always pursue whatever it is that you love doing. The fact is that in the last three years the business has changed considerably. It has gone from being hard, to being very very hard. BHA Design is pleased to announce their recent collaboration with Eat Greener Denver in designing their new bicycle racks.

Eat Greener Denver is an association of locally-owned, independent restaurants that are stewards for sustainable action in the restaurant industry. Eat Greener Denver now teams up with more than 30 local and national vendors dedicated to furthering green initiatives in their four walls.

Earlier this year, Eat Greener Denver organized a fundraiser with the hope that they could raise enough money to fund a community service project. Through their efforts, and the generous support of the Denver community, they were able to raise enough money to create a real impact. Ultimately the group decided to use the funds to promote bicycle riding in Denver.

Adam Schlegel, a member of Eat Greener Denver and one of the owners of Snooze Eatery, discovered that the new bike racks in Downtown Fort Collins were designed by BHA Design. So he contacted BHA to see if we could assist them in developing a fun new bike rack concept.
It was during that first phone call with Adam Schlegel that we dreamed up the idea of a “Fork Rack” - and it stuck! BHA Design is excited to announce that Eat Greener Denver purchased twenty Fork Racks which they plan to place in locations throughout downtown Denver. The first nine Fork Bike Racks have been installed with the others not far behind.

When it comes to street photography I rarely know what pictures I'm going to make ahead of time. It can get pretty boring and diminish the unpolished and unique view of one's personal perspective when one knows the end result of an image. The beauty of photography is that at times it can allow one to let their inner true self, or subconscious out in the open. Whether you're aware of it or not, it's a direct connection to the mind's eye just below the surface of consciousness. In being conscious of what's right in front of you and keeping an open mind one can stay in touch with ones own sense of creative self expression. I have found this works best when one does not hesitate at all to pull the trigger when they feel something interesting is happening or is about to happen. Being completely free from any sense of result and it the same time being completely aware of the present moment is when the magic happens.

Facebook Creates new photo viewer

Recent Facebook Changes Are Bad For Professional Photographers

Facebook announced and new photo viewer that they’re rolling out for all their users in the next couple weeks that allows you to upload 2048 pixel wide images to your page. That’s an 8 time increase over the old 720 pixel limit and seems like a boon to professional photographers who use FB to connect with their clients. The viewer also provides a nice way to page through an album of images.

Inexplicably they’ve decided to include a link on all the images that allows users to download the high res image. This seems like it would be something you could turn off as I could not imagine a professional photographer wanting to allow viewers the ability to download the images but there’s no setting in the privacy controls.

If that’s not bad enough one of my readers (Marco Aurelio) alerted me to a change to the business pages (here) that now prevents you from placing links, photos, albums and video albums on the front of any Facebook page. Additionally the header images, now front and center, are chosen at random.

New York Congressman Resigns Over Shirtless Photo

Representative Chris Lee of New York, caught in the midst of a scandal involving a shirtless photo he reportedly sent to a woman on the Internet, has stepped down, according to a senior Congressional official.

Mr. Lee, a Republican, notified the Republican Speaker of the House of his decision in a letter he sent this afternoon after the scandal erupted.

Mr. Lee’s office released a statement late Wednesday in which the he asks for forgiveness. “I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents,’’ he said. “I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.’’

Mr. Lee won his district, located in the western New York region, in 2008, when he ran in place of Thomas Reynolds, who announced his retirement.

Last year, another New York Congressman, Eric J. Massa, a Democrat, resigned amid accusations that he had groped a male aide.

Mr. Lee’s decision to step down came after a photo of him without a shirt appeared on Gawker along with e-mails exchanges that reportedly took place between him and a woman who had placed a personal notice in the “women seeking men” section of Craigslist.

A quick trip to the mountains last week to spend sometime with my brother. Attached is a quick video I put together of our ski trip together. We had great weather and good conditions. My brother, the Doctor in the family, works extremely hard in the health care industry and it was a lot of fun to get out on the hill with him for a few days and let it rip. A big thanks to good old Dad for teaching us to ski as soon as we could stand. The sport has given us a lot of good memories.

The following clips are taken behind the scenes during a production for our client ViaTech Consulting. This was another great shoot using the Canon 5d. In this particular shot I was using a 50mm lens @ F4. To create a sense of dept we used a jib for camera movement and pulled the focus from the kiosk in the background to the talent in the foreground. Our lighting set up was simple and clean in order to have flexibility on the back end with the edit. This was a informational video put together for the client in order to showcase a new software they created for the health industry. At the end of the behind the scenes is a raw clip from the Canon 5d which we used in the final edit. In post we did a slight color correction and added graphics within the kiosk. My producer and I wrote and directed this space upon the clients request. Knowing that we that our production was going to be a,"talking head on white" we did our best to make it interesting with camera movement and graphics. Once again the Canon 5d did not disappoint.

I've been producing and shooting a lot of work in the last couple weeks and I'm thrilled to have a moment to post some of the fun stuff I've been to working on. Recently I've had more request to produce and shoot motion picture film productions. The following clip is from a recent interview with a VP from a multicultural agency in Denver. I can't post the interview, but I have put together a few seconds of "B" roll from the out takes which I found highly amusing. Marcus Jimenez is a brilliant multicultural strategic planner who has some pretty strong opinions on the growing Latino and Hispanic markets; and CEO's and Brand Managers nation wide are listening closing to what he has to say. More importantly he has a great sense of humor and was fantastic to work with. Thanks Marcus for being such a good sport during our production, you made it easy.

Letter to a Getty Director

Hello Rolf,

Thanks for getting back with me. I appreciate your feedback, I am always interested in learning more from individuals who have worked on the editing, directing and producing stock imagery.

So far my experience with Getty has been good, but at the same time I've only been with them for less then a year. I've been successful with my submission rate which I think is contributed to keeping production cost low, and keeping the number of images submitted low. The editors seem very tight with little to no room for similar images. I do feel positive about working with Getty as I have I have built a successful system of producing, shooting, retouching and submitting. I have heard nightmares from other stock shooters who have spend a lot of money producing work, only getting a couple images accepted. This can be extremely frustrating as there is a lot of up front work without any promise of getting images accepted. For example I've had a friend put together a $15,000 production for a two day shoot to only get 4 images accepted. Those are tough numbers and can kill one's ambition to work with Getty very quickly. On the other hand I have found great talent to work with me for free on a half day shoot working with natural light and have had 17 images accepted. The success comes from testing the waters with talent in previous submissions, keeping my overhead very low, and keeping my time in production very low as well. The less time and energy I put out, the less I'm disappointed when I don't get the numbers I'm looking for.

One very frustrating aspect is I feel like Getty is one big machine with no one to speak with, bounce ideas off of, or ask for guidance. Maybe this type of relationship will develop over time as my library grows, and my sales increase. If I had someone that I could speak with or email in order to receive guidance I think I would be more motivated to produce more work. Another extremely frustrating aspect is receiving only 20% on royalty free sales. As you know if a photographer wants to choose what type of licensing an image receives he is charged $50 per image, but if you leave it to the editors there is no charge. Most of my images as of late have been licensed as RF. From my perspective I would rather leave this decision to the editors who have a better feel for how and where images should be placed. In the end I would prefer an RF image that sells cheap, but sells often over an RM image that doesn't sell at all.

Currently my "feeding the machine" consists of 2 to 3 shoots a month keeping over head as low as possible. Shoots consist or one or two talent, on location for a full or half day. With a half day shoot I do my best to knock out 1000 frames. Out of that 1000 I edit it down to 50-75. Out of that I retouch 25-35. Out of that I get accepted 8-15 images. That puts me close to getting 20-45 images accepted a month. With 12 months in a year I"m looking at maybe 300 plus images accepted a year. When I began to think of my stock shoots in these terms I started to see my acceptance rate increase, and I was able to be realistic about my acceptance numbers with the production cost I was putting behind it. Its too soon to see if it has financially worked out. What will 300 to 400 new images a year equal to in sales and profit, I don't know yet. I have committed to this schedule for the year, in hopes that I will see my statements build consistency and build sales. Time will tell and I plan on adjusting my work flow accordingly.

There's a catch. I took four years off from photography full time and worked as an Art Director at a large advertising agency to learn more about photography from the client's side. This was an amazing experience that gave me a lot of insight on what AD's are looking for, how they think, and the over all hurtles they go through on a day to day basis in order to sell in their concepts and produce their artwork. From this vantage point I produce my stock work thinking more about the end game and less about my vision as a photographer. Both perspectives are there, but having an AD's knowledge base has allow me to be more successful in producing, shooting and submitting in the long run. Another advantage is that I'm currently located in Colorado. Talent is cheap, natural light and weather is great, and locations are easy to come by. I also have the ability to hit both coasts when I need to get of town and change things up.

Another important perspective I have taken about working within stock photography is that it is a long term investment. I have had many photographers contact me about shooting stock looking for a quick turn on their money. I clearly state that is not the case, unless you have a significant amount of money to put behind it. But even then it will take 9 months to a year to get a return on your investment if you're lucky, let alone make a profit. As you can imagine photographers don't like to hear that.

I hope I have not been to wordy in my response, but as you can tell I am hungry to hear from someone who as extensive experience in this field. I am very interested in collaborating with you developing strategy for long term shooting and maximizing stock potential. I would also be interested in seeking your advice about getting my work in front of more buyers, art directors and producers. Or if you are interested I could pull together a package of images that you could put in front of individuals in the industry.

As you can imagine, how it works varies a great deal to match with a photographer's needs and abilities. What I can contribute ranges from writing a simple, one-time shot-list for a shoot, to creating a story-board/look-book for a shoot and creative research to inform your shot choices, to editing your existing library, to pre-production art direction (i.e., advising on selecting models, locations, etc.), to on-set art direction, editing a shoot after it's processed, advising on re-touching, and so on. I have a lot of nuts-and-bolts shoot production-supervising experience, augmenting the art direction. In preparing for a shoot, I can meet with a photographer just once to draft and fine-tune a shoot brief, or collaborate with full time for many days, or on an occasional-consulting basis: meeting a few times at key points before, during and/or after a shoot. Apart from shoots and editing, I can help develop a photographer's strategy for long-term shooting plans and maximizing the stock potential of personal work and even assignments for other customers. The possibilities of how I could work with a photographer are wide and very much customized to the needs of the project at hand and the photographer's needs.

A narrative through imagery.

Telling a story through still images is one of my greatest sources of joy. Whether it is the pairing of similar images or contrasting completely different images a photographer/storyteller has the ability to put the viewer's mind in motion. These two images for example where take at two different times in two completely different places, but for some reason I like how they contrast together. I always enjoy the opportunity to show my work to people in person because it gives me the chance to watch how an individual views things. It is very interesting to me to study one's eye cross back and forth over an image. I believe that a successful photographer can control the eye movement of a viewer by choosing their composition carefully with forethought and intention. This rapid eye movement over a still image happens so quickly the view often times is unaware of what their eyes are doing. As a photographer and storyteller I truly enjoy the ability to influence others without them being aware there is a specific intention put in place. I believe this is part of creating a memorable image.

This is a recent image from a shoot I did for Getty images in San Francisco. I became involved with Getty through Jupiter Images in 2009. To make a long story short, Getty bought Jupiter and in doing so aquired my library of images. This was a great opportunity from me to sell more images online. The process of putting a shoot together, editing, and submitting takes months. Once images are in and accepted it takes 4 to 6 months to see a return on the investment.

For the Embrace! exhibition, the DAM asked 17 artists to create one-of-a-kind installations for the Frederic C. Hamilton Building, our angular building designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind

“The concept of Embrace! was to open a dialog between painting and architecture,” explains Christoph Heinrich, the DAM’s deputy director and curator of the exhibition.

About the Hamilton Building

In 2001, the DAM commissioned architect Daniel Libeskind to design an expansion that would accommodate our growing collections and programs. The 146,000-square-foot Frederic C. Hamilton Building opened to the public in October 2006.

“Curators, educators, and designers have lived with this building for three years and have seen their proposals take shape here,” notes Heinrich. “Now, artists are taking over. X_mas break! Back in Central and loving it. Blessed to have the opportunity and the time. Thanks Ed for picking up this great shot of me enjoying the beautiful off shore sets the roll in every morning.Chest high at sunrise in 78 degree water is a great way to start the day. We were lucky to have great weather. I'm a big fan of the long board, its like a Catalac rolling down hill. Once it gets going in the right direction all you need to do is guide it and hand on and enjoy the scenery.

The key to creating a successful head shot is making sure you have flattering light for your subject. In my mind natural night works best. Open shade with fill cards creates a beautiful, yet simple look which is very flattering for any subject. Filling in the light with white cleans up the light, and creates a nice soft catch light in your subjects eye. Shallow dept of field with a long lens works best.

Personal Work.

Why is personal work so important to me? I guess I would have to start with the idea that comes from a place of self expression in which the image's soul purpose is to inspire and provoke without an end game. Interesting compositions to me are always fun as I love the ability to create images that lead the viewers eye and attention. And if I can get a viewer to think a little bit about themselves and the world at large I'm doing a good job. I was once told that one of the reasons why some of my images are so successful is because I am very focused on how the subject matter leaves the frame. I thought that was a very interesting observation, and a very true one. I am always paying very close attention on the corners of my frame through the view finder.

Baby Boomers.

I had another great shoot this past week for one of my favorite clients. The subject: Baby Boomers. It was a great shoot that was full of laughs. One of the reasons why I enjoy working with this client so much and why the shoots always seem to be so successful is because we create an open and fun environment for everyone working on set. I find both the talent and clients always work best when the mood is light and fun, with alittle bit of a care free attitude. I always try to maintain a professional situation for everyone I work with because we all have a job to do, but at the same time its great to be able to breathe, relax, and have fun while we're working. I feel its this type of attitude a key part in creating honest images that convey a genuine moment in time.

Working with Kids

Another great assignment shooting kids. I feel the success in working with children is to become a kid while working with them. Just like any assignment when working with people it helps to be intuitive, and to have an understanding of the other person's perspective. Kids are great because they are care free, and there's always a lot of candy on set! But more importantly it takes me back time when I didn't have much to worry about and my innocent view of the world made life simple.

Yoga

Yoga. I love it. Its huge part of my life, and I find strength in my daily practice. I recently produced a stock shoot for Getty Images. Yoga vs. Getty Images? I'll take yoga all day long. In becoming a shooter for Getty I have mixed emotions about continuing as a contributor. I can only hope that the industry bounces back along with everything else in the economy. Between microstock and the current state of the industry I feel unbalanced. Who knows, and why worry

Getty Pinhole

The Getty. I shot a series of 4x5 pinholes while I was last in LA. I find the pinhole to be a great camera for shooting architecture. No moving parts to the camera, no tilt, or shift elements for focus. Simple. Just make sure you get your exposure right. A good twenty seconds under direct light should yield a good shot. The perspective is wider then your eye, but you don't get the fisheye effect like you would using a glass lens, which is why I love it so much Learning how to create good compositions only takes a little practice. Polaroid anyone?

Peru

Images from my recent trip to Peru. In a word, "amazing". What a wonderful and diverse country with all the culture and food anyone could ask for. I took these images while I was passing through the Sacred Valley. I can't wait to get back to South America, I love everything about it except the stomach aches. Peru also has the highest and largest fresh body of water in the Americas. Lake Titicaca. I remember hearing this word for the first time in first grade, but I never asked where or what it was.

Fun facts on Titicaca

The lake is located at the northern end of the endorheic Altiplano basin high in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. The western part of the lake lies within the Puno Region of Peru, and the eastern side is located in the Bolivian La Paz Department.

The lake is composed of two nearly separate sub-basins that are connected by the Strait of Tiquina which is 800 m (2,620 ft) across at the narrowest point. The larger sub-basin, Lago Grande (also called Lago Chucuito) has a mean depth of 135 m (443 ft) and a maximum depth of 284 m (932 ft). The smaller sub-basin, Wiñaymarka (also called Lago Pequeño, "little lake") has a mean depth of 9 m (30 ft) and a maximum depth of 40 m (131 ft).^[5] The overall average depth of the lake is 107 m (351 ft).^[1]

Lake Titicaca is fed by rainfall and meltwater from glaciers on the sierras that abut the Altiplano. Five major river systems feed into Lake Titicaca^[6]—in order of their relative flow volumes these are: Ramis, Coata, Ilave, Huancané, and Suchez.^[3] More than 20 other smaller streams empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated.

A recent editorial spread for Dining Out Magazine. I sent a copy to my father as I know he would enjoy the back story on the distiller. When he saw the spread he asked me why I took a photo of the distiller looking the wrong way. I blamed it on the Art Director.

A few iphone images from my recent trip to Boston. Fenway, the Green Monster and two Youkilis's in Quincy Market. A great trip back to "bean town" with my girlfriend Carol. I love the way these three images work together. There's nothing like the history in Boston. I know I was a brewer and a patriot in that town in a past life. I always try to capture interesting perspectives and moments everywhere I go. I believe its my gift.

Even though the competition is thick, the timing is always tight, and the clients often uneasy, a talented creative thrives off of all the challenges at hand and produces work that exceeds expectations and gets results.
